Choose the Good Part! – Dr. Paul Dhinakaran

“But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:42)
Have you ever wondered what is the purpose of your life? There is just one thing that is needed in life as taught by Jesus. When Jesus went to May and Martha’s house, Martha was busy trying to serve Jesus and his disciples while Mary chose to sit down at the feet of the Lord and listen to Him. In our eyes, what Martha did looks valuable but to Jesus, what Mary did looked wise. He calmed down busy Martha saying, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things. But only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, and it will not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:41,42). Many at times we forget this truth. We get busy in doing many good things and forget that the only most important thing God wants us to concentrate is our relationship with Him.

I once read about the life history of William Brenham, where he writes like this: “When the Lord separated me for His ministry after my salvation, I was preaching all the time. I had no time to spend at the feet of the Lord. Gradually, I lost all my spiritual power, because I had failed to strengthen myself daily waiting at His feet. I was not aware of the fact that I can be useful to others only if I read the Bible and pray regularly. Thus, I learnt a valuable lesson because of these failures. Then I decided to wait on Him regularly. No matter what work came my way, I made sure I was at His feet in the first place. This strengthened me. The more I waited at the feet of the Lord, the more I was filled with the power of God, the greater were the blessings of the Lord in my ministry.”

My dear friend, you too may have come across situations like this. Like Martha, sometimes we are carried away with our work, more concerned about serving the Lord, volunteering at the church etc. Are you running around trying to make things right? Remember, my friend, it is God who makes things work. Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain (Psalm 127:1). The thing to be done on your part is to choose Him, receive Him and make Him your portion. Do not miss out on your relationship with Him. It is more important to be at the feet of the Lord. Spend more time at the feet of God. Jesus says, “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock” (Mathew 7:24). Only if we listen to what Jesus says through His word we will remain unshakable when storms hit us.
Prayer:
Loving Father,

Till this day I have been running around working for You, doing good and was satisfied with it. But ultimately, I forgot that it’s more important to be at Your feet. Lord, though I am eager to serve You like Martha, but let me be like Mary who chose the good part. Give me the grace to spend more time at Your feet.
