Speak wise words! – Dr. Paul Dhinakaran
“…he who restrains his lips is wise.” (Proverbs 10:19)
The Bible warns us against unwholesome talk. Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night (Psalm 1:1,2). It does not please God when we mock the way others talk or do things. Making fun out of people hurts them as well as God. The Bible says, ‘that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires’ (2 Peter 3:3). We are in the last days when mocking is much appreciated. Mocking the way people look and many other things. All this saddens God’s heart. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving (Ephesians 5:4) God says “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear” (Ephesians 4:29).
Years before, there was a tragic airplane crash in New Zealand. It crashed against a volcano causing the death of 257 persons. The automatic warning device at the top of that volcano had clearly given out the warning signal thrice. The fourth time, its warning was completely drowned by the jokes of the pilots. As a result, the plane dashed against the volcano, killing everyone. If only the pilot had been careful to listen to that warning signal on time, the lives of those innocent passengers would have been saved. Alas! What is gone is gone.
Yes my friend, unwanted talk, unnecessary comments and gossip can be harmful for us. Take time today to answer these questions by yourself. How do you spend time with the Lord every day? Are you cracking jokes, wasting time on gossip or indulging in worthless conversations about others? Remember! Through these vain words, Satan will certainly enter into your lives. Then you will backslide from Jesus, having lost your fellowship with Him and the outcome is that, you would live in sin. So, whenever you find time, spend it usefully seeking the Lord and live in fellowship with Him, with your family and with the saintly people of God. This quality time will surely edify you and make you a better person.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
I confess that I have spoken unwanted words, gossiped and hurt others’ feelings through my words. Forgive me for my unwanted idle words. I pray for Your Holy Spirit to fill me and guard my lips from slanderous talk. Let my speech be seasoned with salt building the lives of others. Let my tongue bring healing in the lives of the broken hearted.
This I plead in Jesus’ name, Amen.
